Overview

Mefenamic acid is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) of the anthranilic acid derivative (fenamate) class. It is used for the short-term treatment (up to 7 days) of mild to moderate pain, including primary dysmenorrhea (menstrual pain), and other types of acute pain such as musculoskeletal pain, dental pain, and postoperative pain. Mefenamic acid works primarily by inhibiting cyclooxygenase enzymes COX-1 and COX-2, which are involved in prostaglandin synthesis; this leads to reduced inflammation, analgesia, and antipyresis[1][3][5][6]. The drug was originally developed by Parke-Davis in the 1960s. It should be taken with food due to gastrointestinal side effects common with NSAIDs.
