Overview

Mefenorex is a mild central nervous system stimulant and sympathomimetic agent that was developed in the 1970s as an appetite suppressant for the adjunctive treatment of obesity. It is an amphetamine derivative and acts as a prodrug, being metabolized to racemic amphetamine (levoamphetamine and dextroamphetamine), which are responsible for its pharmacological effects. The drug was considered to have relatively mild stimulant properties with low abuse potential compared to other amphetamines. Despite this, it has been withdrawn from many markets due to regulatory concerns. Its primary indication was as adjunctive therapy in patients with obesity who did not respond adequately to diet alone[3][4][5].
