Overview
Meflumetone is a novel small molecule non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) currently under clinical development, primarily in China. It is a fluorinated analog of nabumetone, designed to act as a non-acidic prodrug that inhibits cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, particularly COX-2, to reduce the production of pro-inflammatory prostaglandins. By incorporating a fluorine atom, the molecule is intended to optimize the pharmacokinetic profile and potentially enhance the safety and efficacy compared to existing NSAIDs. Meflumetone is being investigated for the treatment of pain and inflammatory conditions, such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, and has undergone Phase 1 clinical evaluation, including mass balance and pharmacokinetic studies in healthy volunteers.
