meflunidone hydrochloride

Meflunidone hydrochloride is a small molecule pyridone derivative developed by Guangzhou Nanxin Pharmaceutical for the treatment of chronic kidney diseases, including diabetic nephropathy and chronic tubulointerstitial nephritis. It functions as a transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-β1) inhibitor with broad-spectrum anti-fibrotic activity. The drug works by inhibiting cell proliferation induced by high glucose and TGF-β stimulation, which in turn reduces the production of fibrosis-related cytokines and proteins, and decreases the synthesis and accumulation of the extracellular matrix. Clinically, meflunidone hydrochloride is intended to reduce glomerular pressure, decrease proteinuria, and delay the deterioration of renal function. It has progressed to Phase 2 clinical trials for type 2 diabetic nephropathy.
