Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Mefmet-DS is a combination pharmaceutical product marketed by MetaneX Life Science, an Indian generic pharmaceutical company. It is typically formulated as an oral suspension or tablet and contains two active ingredients: Mefenamic acid and Metronidazole. Mefenamic acid is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that acts by inhibiting the cyclooxygenase enzymes (COX-1 and COX-2), thereby reducing the synthesis of prostaglandins responsible for pain and inflammation. Metronidazole is a nitroimidazole anti-infective agent that targets anaerobic bacteria and protozoa; it works by forming cytotoxic intermediate radicals that cause DNA strand breakage and inhibit nucleic acid synthesis. Mefmet-DS is primarily indicated for the treatment of mixed gastrointestinal infections, such as amoebic dysentery and bacterial diarrhea, where it simultaneously addresses the underlying infection and the associated abdominal pain and cramps.
