MEG-002 is an allogeneic cell therapy product composed of functional platelets derived from human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). Developed by Megakaryon Corporation, the product utilizes HLA-homozygous iPSCs—specifically those carrying the most common HLA haplotype in Japan—to reduce the risk of immune-mediated rejection. The manufacturing process involves differentiating iPSCs into megakaryocytes, which then produce platelets using specialized culture technology. MEG-002 is intended for patients with thrombocytopenia as a standardized, pathogen-free alternative to donor-dependent blood transfusions. A Phase 1 first-in-human clinical trial was initiated in 2022 to evaluate its safety and efficacy.
