Overview
Megalotect is a human cytomegalovirus (CMV) hyperimmune globulin preparation derived from the plasma of donors with high antibody titers against CMV. Developed by Biotest Pharma and distributed by partners such as TwinPharma in the Benelux region, it is indicated for the prophylaxis of clinical manifestations of CMV infection in immunosuppressed patients, particularly those undergoing solid organ or hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. The drug provides passive immunity by neutralizing viral particles and preventing their entry into host cells. Its mechanism of action also involves immunomodulatory effects such as complement-mediated lysis, opsonization, and antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC) against CMV-infected cells.
