Overview

Megamylase is an oral enzyme preparation containing alpha-amylase, marketed by FRiLAB. It is primarily indicated as an adjunctive treatment for congestive conditions of the oropharynx, such as sore throat, and is also used for digestive support. The active ingredient, alpha-amylase, is a hydrolase enzyme that catalyzes the breakdown of starch and other polysaccharides into smaller carbohydrate units like maltose by cleaving alpha-1,4-glycosidic bonds. The medication is available in two oral formulations: a syrup (200 U.CEIP/ml) approved for use in adults, children over 3 years, and infants from 6 months, and coated tablets (3000 U.CEIP) reserved for adult use. Treatment is typically short-term, with a recommended duration not exceeding five days without medical advice. Common side effects may include nausea, vomiting, and rare allergic reactions such as urticaria.
