Overview
Megestrol is a synthetic progestin primarily used as an appetite stimulant and in the treatment of hormone-sensitive cancers. It is most commonly administered as megestrol acetate. Its main indications include advanced breast cancer and endometrial (uterine) cancer that has recurred or metastasized and cannot be treated surgically. Additionally, it is used to manage anorexia (loss of appetite), cachexia (wasting syndrome), or unexplained weight loss in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). The drug works by mimicking the effects of progesterone—a natural female hormone—thereby interfering with hormonal pathways that some cancers depend on for growth and stimulating appetite through central mechanisms[1][2][3][4][5][6][7].
