Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Megestrol acetate is a synthetic derivative of progesterone with potent progestational and anti-estrogenic properties. Marketed by Advagen under the brand name MEGVAL, it is primarily indicated for the palliative treatment of advanced breast and endometrial carcinomas, as well as for the management of anorexia, cachexia, or significant weight loss in patients with cancer or HIV/AIDS. The drug's appetite-stimulating effect is believed to be mediated through the hypothalamus and the modulation of inflammatory cytokines like IL-1, IL-6, and TNF-alpha. It is typically administered orally in tablet form.
