meglutol

Meglutol is a small molecule antilipemic (lipid-lowering) agent that reduces cholesterol, triglycerides, serum beta-lipoproteins, and phospholipids. Its mechanism of action involves interfering with the enzymatic steps in the conversion of acetate to hydroxymethylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA), as well as competitively inhibiting the activity of HMG-CoA reductase—the rate-limiting enzyme in cholesterol biosynthesis. This inhibition leads to decreased endogenous cholesterol production. Meglutol has been studied primarily in experimental settings and animal models; it is not approved for clinical use in humans[1][2][3][6][7][8][9].
