Drug intelligence / Profile preview
HY02 (Meizuvo) is a first-in-class, topical, preservative-free ophthalmic ointment formulation of minocycline developed by Hovione Scientia Limited for the treatment of inflamed meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). The formulation utilizes Hovione's proprietary minocycline base, which is stabilized as microparticles in a novel vehicle to enable effective delivery to the ocular surface. Minocycline, a lipophilic tetracycline antibiotic, is repurposed here for its potent anti-inflammatory properties and its ability to inhibit matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), specifically MMP-9, which is elevated in patients with MGD and associated dry eye disease. Its lipophilic nature provides a high affinity for the meibomian glands, allowing for targeted action to stabilize the tear film and reduce glandular inflammation.
