Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Mejoral is an over-the-counter analgesic and antipyretic medication available in several countries under different formulations. The primary active ingredient in most Mejoral products is acetaminophen (also known as paracetamol), which is used to treat mild to moderate pain such as headaches, menstrual cramps, toothaches, backaches, osteoarthritis pain, and aches associated with cold or flu. Some formulations of Mejoral also contain caffeine to enhance analgesic effects or aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) for its anti-inflammatory properties. In some regions (such as Ecuador), ibuprofen may be present instead of acetaminophen or aspirin[2][3][5]. Acetaminophen works mainly by inhibiting cyclooxygenase enzymes (COX-1 and COX-2) in the central nervous system to reduce pain and fever; it may also involve other pathways such as serotonergic and endocannabinoid systems[8]. Aspirin acts by irreversibly inhibiting cyclooxygenase enzymes involved in prostaglandin synthesis. Caffeine acts as a central nervous system stimulant that can enhance the effect of analgesics.
