Overview
Melaleuca alternifolia essential oil, widely known as tea tree oil (TTO), is a botanical extract obtained via steam distillation from the leaves of the Australian native plant *Melaleuca alternifolia*. The oil is characterized by its high content of terpinen-4-ol, which provides documented antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties. In clinical research conducted by Briant Burke, MD, MS, TTO was evaluated as a topical treatment for molluscum contagiosum in children, often in combination with iodine. Its mechanism of action involves the physical disruption of viral lipid envelopes and the loss of cellular integrity. Clinical data from Australian trials (e.g., ACTRN12610000984099) indicated that topical application significantly reduces the number of visible lesions with a favorable safety profile.
