This is an experimental mouthrinse formulation containing 0.3% Melaleuca alternifolia (tea tree oil) nanoparticles, developed by researchers at the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria in Brazil. The formulation utilizes nanotechnology, specifically lipid nanoparticles composed of acetyl palmitate as the solid lipid and polysorbate 80 as the surfactant, to deliver the active tea tree oil. It is designed for the treatment of dental plaque and associated gingival inflammation by leveraging the antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties of M. alternifolia. In a randomized, double-blind, crossover clinical trial (NCT02695901), the nanoparticle solution was compared to 0.12% chlorhexidine gluconate, demonstrating antimicrobial activity but lower anti-plaque efficacy than the chlorhexidine control, though it showed similar anti-inflammatory effects as measured by gingival crevicular fluid volume.
