Overview

Melanoxetin is a hydroxylated flavonoid investigated for its potential therapeutic effects in type 2 diabetes mellitus. In preclinical studies using animal models, melanoxetin demonstrated antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antidiabetic properties. It reduced insulin resistance in adipose tissue by targeting protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B), counteracted oxidative stress by reducing nitrotyrosine levels and modulating superoxide dismutase 1 and heme oxygenase expression, and decreased advanced glycation end products (AGEs) such as methylglyoxal-derived hydroimidazolone (MG-H1). Melanoxetin also exhibited anti-inflammatory effects by lowering serum prostaglandin E2 levels and improved vascular antioxidant status. These findings suggest that melanoxetin may have therapeutic potential for mitigating multiple pathways involved in type 2 diabetes complications[6].
