Overview

Melarsomine is an arsenic-based small molecule anthelmintic used in veterinary medicine, primarily for the treatment of adult heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) infection in dogs. It is marketed under the trade names Immiticide and Diroban. Melarsomine is the only FDA-approved adulticide for canine heartworm disease and is not approved for use in cats or dogs with late-stage infection. The drug acts as a trypanocidal agent and organic arsenical chemotherapeutic, though its exact mechanism of action against *D. immitis* remains unknown. Melarsomine must be administered by deep intramuscular injection by a veterinarian due to potential toxicity and risk of complications[1][2][4][7].
