Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Melengestrol is a synthetic progestin, a type of steroid hormone, primarily used in veterinary medicine. Its acetate ester, melengestrol acetate (MGA), is widely administered to livestock, particularly cattle, to enhance growth rates, improve feed efficiency, and synchronize estrus cycles. MGA is also utilized as a reversible contraceptive in various captive animal species, including baboons, colobus monkeys, giraffes, and tigers, to manage fertility. Research is ongoing into its potential anti-inflammatory properties and its interaction with growth hormone receptors in fish.
