Overview
Melevodopa is a methyl ester prodrug of levodopa, developed to improve the oral bioavailability and absorption characteristics of levodopa for the treatment of Parkinson's disease. Like levodopa, it acts as a precursor to dopamine and is converted in the brain to dopamine, supplementing deficient levels in patients with Parkinson's disease. Melevodopa was designed to be more water-soluble than standard levodopa, allowing for faster and more predictable absorption from the gastrointestinal tract. It is typically administered in combination with carbidopa (as co-careldopa) to inhibit peripheral decarboxylation and enhance central nervous system delivery.
