Overview

Melilotus albus pollen is an allergenic extract derived from the pollen of the white sweetclover plant (*Melilotus albus*). Approved by the FDA in 1967 under BLA 101376, it is classified as a biologic used for the diagnosis and treatment of allergic reactions. In diagnostic applications, it is used for skin testing (percutaneous or intradermal) to identify type I hypersensitivity. In therapeutic applications, it is used in allergen immunotherapy (allergy shots) to desensitize the immune system by inducing regulatory T cells and shifting the cytokine profile from a Th2 to a Th1 response, thereby reducing symptoms of allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis, and asthma upon subsequent exposure to the pollen.
