Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Melinjo seed extract is a nutraceutical and dietary supplement derived from the seeds of *Gnetum gnemon* (melinjo), native to Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia. It is rich in polyphenols and stilbenoids, including trans-resveratrol, gnetin C (a resveratrol dimer), gnetin L, gnemonoside A, gnemonoside C, and gnemonoside D[1][4][5][7][8]. The extract is reported to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, antimicrobial, metabolic, and chemopreventive activities. Mechanistically, it exerts its effects primarily through inhibition of cyclooxygenase enzyme activity (anti-inflammatory)[1], antioxidant free radical scavenging[2][3][4], induction of apoptosis in cancer cells via caspase-3/7-dependent and -independent mechanisms[3], and improving metabolic parameters such as insulin sensitivity and serum uric acid[3][5]. Active constituents are mostly resveratrol derivatives, particularly gnetin C, which has a longer half-life in blood compared to trans-resveratrol[5][6]. Melinjo seed extract is used as a functional food supplement, and clinical studies suggest it is generally safe in recommended oral dosages[5][8].
