Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**melittin + MhIL-2** is a recombinant fusion protein composed of the antimicrobial peptide **melittin** (the primary lytic component of bee venom) genetically fused to a mutant form of **human interleukin-2 (MhIL-2)**. This fusion protein was developed to combine melittin’s direct cytotoxic/antitumor activity with the immune-stimulating effects of IL-2. It has been shown to directly inhibit growth of various human cancer cell lines (such as ovarian cancer SKOV3 cells) both in vitro and in vivo, and to suppress tumor growth and metastasis. The mechanism includes **direct cytotoxic action on tumor cells**, **induction of T cell and NK cell cytotoxicity**, and **increased IFN-γ production**. The fusion protein outperforms recombinant IL-2 alone for activating immune cells and mediating antitumor effects in preclinical models.
