Overview

Meloxicam is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to relieve pain, tenderness, swelling, and stiffness caused by osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and juvenile idiopathic arthritis in children aged 2 years and older. It is also sometimes used for ankylosing spondylitis. Meloxicam works primarily by inhibiting the cyclooxygenase enzymes (COX‑1 and COX‑2), with a preference for COX‑2 inhibition. This reduces the synthesis of prostaglandins—substances that mediate inflammation, pain, and fever. The drug is available in oral (tablet, capsule, suspension), orally disintegrating tablet (ODT), and intravenous formulations. Developed by Boehringer Ingelheim in the late 1970s and approved for medical use in the US since 2000, meloxicam is now widely available as a generic medication[1][2][3][5][7][8].
