Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Meloxicam vaginal ring is a novel drug-device combination developed by Laboratorios Andromaco S.A. for the treatment of primary dysmenorrhea. Meloxicam is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that acts as a selective inhibitor of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), thereby reducing the production of prostaglandins that cause uterine contractions and pain during menstruation. This formulation utilizes a vaginal ring to provide sustained, local delivery of the medication directly to the pelvic region. This approach is designed to achieve effective pain relief while minimizing systemic exposure, potentially reducing the risk of gastrointestinal and other systemic side effects commonly associated with oral NSAID therapy. The product has been evaluated in Phase 2/3 clinical trials to compare its efficacy and safety against oral diclofenac and placebo in women of childbearing age.
