Drug intelligence / Profile preview
LP072 is an oral dissolving film (ODF) formulation of memantine hydrochloride, a low-to-moderate affinity uncompetitive N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist. Developed by Xiamen LiZhuo Pharmaceutical, LP072 is designed for the treatment of Alzheimer's-type dementia. The oral mucosal drug delivery system allows the film to dissolve rapidly on the tongue without the need for water, which is intended to improve treatment adherence and ease of administration in elderly patients, particularly those suffering from dysphagia. Memantine works by binding to NMDA receptor-operated cation channels, thereby blocking the effects of pathologically elevated tonic levels of glutamate that may lead to neuronal dysfunction and neurodegeneration. LP072 is currently in Phase 1 clinical development in China.
