Membrane Blue Dual is a vital dye solution used as a surgical aid in vitreoretinal procedures, specifically designed to enhance the visualization of ocular membranes. It is a combination product containing 0.15% Trypan Blue, which primarily stains epiretinal membranes (ERM) and necrotic tissue, and 0.025% Brilliant Blue G (BBG), which has a high affinity for the internal limiting membrane (ILM). The formulation typically includes 4% polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a density enhancer, creating a "heavy" dye that sinks through a balanced salt solution (BSS) to the retinal surface. This allows for precise application without the need for a fluid-air exchange.
