Overview

**MenAfriVac** is a monovalent meningococcal group A polysaccharide-tetanus toxoid conjugate vaccine developed for prevention of invasive disease and meningitis caused by *Neisseria meningitidis* serogroup A, particularly in the African meningitis belt. The vaccine contains purified group A meningococcal capsular polysaccharide covalently conjugated to tetanus toxoid carrier protein, which converts the polysaccharide antigen into a T-cell-dependent immunogen and induces functional anti-capsular antibodies and immunologic memory. Developed through the Meningitis Vaccine Project led by PATH and the World Health Organization and manufactured by Serum Institute of India, MenAfriVac is supplied as a lyophilized vaccine for reconstitution and intramuscular administration. The original 10 microgram presentation was used in mass campaigns targeting people aged 1 to 29 years; a 5 microgram pediatric presentation was subsequently available for children aged 9 through 24 months.
