Menaquinone-7 is a long-chain form of vitamin K2 characterized by seven isoprene units in its side chain. It acts as a cofactor in the carboxylation of specific proteins required for blood clotting and bone metabolism. Menaquinone-7 has demonstrated roles in promoting bone health, cardiovascular health, and possibly modulating inflammation through various signal transduction pathways such as PI3K/AKT, MAP kinase, JAK/STAT, and NF-kB. It cannot be synthesized by the human body and must be obtained from dietary sources or supplements; natural food content is low so supplementation is common for biomedical applications.
