Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Menhaden oil is a natural oil obtained from menhaden fish (Brevoortia species, mostly Atlantic and Gulf menhaden) and is used primarily as a dietary supplement rich in omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, notably eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and docosapentaenoic acid (DPA)[1][2][3][6]. These fatty acids serve as precursors for anti-inflammatory lipid mediators such as resolvins and neuroprotectins. The main mechanism of action involves lowering plasma triglycerides, reducing blood pressure, improving vascular functions, and decreasing inflammation, with likely benefits for heart disease, metabolic syndrome, neurological protection, and possibly improvement of cognitive function[1][2][3][4][5]. Menhaden oil is generally recognized as safe for human consumption and is marketed primarily as a dietary supplement, not a pharmaceutical agent. It can also be found as an ingredient in animal feed.
