meningococcal (groups A, C, Y and W-135) polysaccharide diphtheria toxoid conjugate vaccine

Menactra is a quadrivalent meningococcal conjugate vaccine developed by Sanofi Pasteur. It is composed of capsular polysaccharides from *Neisseria meningitidis* serogroups A, C, Y, and W-135, each individually conjugated to a diphtheria toxoid protein carrier. The vaccine is designed to prevent invasive meningococcal disease by inducing the production of serum bactericidal antibodies against these four serogroups. In the context of clinical research conducted by the University of Maryland, Baltimore, Menactra was used as an active control in a Phase 4 trial (NCT01430689) evaluating the efficacy of trivalent inactivated influenza vaccines in pregnant women in Mali. It is not an influenza vaccine itself but was chosen as a comparator to provide a health benefit to the control group while maintaining the study's blind.
