Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Polysaccharide diphtheria conjugate vaccine, marketed under the brand name Menactra, is a quadrivalent meningococcal conjugate vaccine developed by Sanofi Pasteur. It is composed of capsular polysaccharides from Neisseria meningitidis serogroups A, C, Y, and W-135, each individually conjugated to a diphtheria toxoid protein carrier. This conjugation converts the immune response from T-cell independent to T-cell dependent, which enables the induction of immunological memory and a more robust antibody response. The vaccine is indicated for active immunization to prevent invasive meningococcal disease caused by N. meningitidis serogroups A, C, Y, and W-135 in individuals aged 9 months through 55 years. It was the first quadrivalent conjugate meningococcal vaccine licensed in the United States, receiving FDA approval in 2005.
