Overview
Menactra is a quadrivalent meningococcal conjugate vaccine developed by Sanofi Pasteur for the prevention of invasive meningococcal disease caused by *Neisseria meningitidis* serogroups A, C, Y, and W-135. Approved by the FDA in 2005, it was the first conjugate vaccine of its kind. The vaccine is composed of capsular polysaccharides from the four serogroups, each individually conjugated to a diphtheria toxoid carrier protein. This conjugation converts the T-cell independent immune response typically seen with polysaccharide vaccines into a T-cell dependent response, which induces immunological memory and higher antibody titers, particularly in young children and adolescents. It is indicated for active immunization in individuals aged 9 months through 55 years and is administered via intramuscular injection.
