The meningococcal A+C conjugate vaccine is a combination vaccine designed to protect against invasive disease caused by Neisseria meningitidis serogroups A and C. It consists of purified capsular polysaccharides from serogroups A and C, each covalently linked (conjugated) to a carrier protein, typically diphtheria or tetanus toxoid. The conjugation enhances immunogenicity by inducing a T-cell dependent immune response, resulting in stronger and longer-lasting immunity compared to plain polysaccharide vaccines. This type of vaccine is primarily used for the prevention of epidemic outbreaks in regions where serogroups A and/or C are prevalent, such as parts of Africa's "meningitis belt" or during specific outbreak responses elsewhere. The primary mechanism is the induction of protective antibodies that neutralize Neisseria meningitidis bacteria expressing these capsular antigens.
