Drug intelligence / Profile preview
The **meningococcal conjugate vaccine (serogroups A, C, W-135, and Y)** is an injectable subunit vaccine designed for **active immunization against invasive disease caused by Neisseria meningitidis serogroups A, C, W-135, and Y**. This vaccine employs polysaccharide antigens from the bacterial capsule of each targeted serogroup conjugated to a protein carrier (such as diphtheria toxoid or CRM197), which enhances immunogenicity by stimulating a T cell–dependent immune response. It does not protect against serogroup B meningococci. Used worldwide and recommended for adolescents, high-risk individuals, travelers to endemic areas (e.g., for Hajj), and during outbreaks, it is highly efficacious and has a strong safety record, with rare but possible local reactions. Common brands include Menactra, Menveo, Menquadfi, and Nimenrix, developed by Sanofi, GSK (GlaxoSmithKline, now Pfizer), and Novartis (now GSK/Pfizer). The vaccine plays a central role in the prevention of bacterial meningitis and septicemia.
