Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Men ACWY is a quadrivalent meningococcal vaccine designed to provide protection against invasive disease caused by *Neisseria meningitidis* serogroups A, C, W-135, and Y. These serogroups are major causes of meningitis and septicemia globally. The vaccine typically consists of capsular polysaccharides from each of the four serogroups, which are often conjugated to a carrier protein (such as CRM197 or diphtheria toxoid) to enhance immunogenicity and induce immunological memory, particularly in infants and young children. Major commercial versions are developed by companies such as GSK, Sanofi, and Pfizer. In clinical research, such as the VAST (Vaccines Against Salmonella Typhi) trial conducted by the University of Oxford, Men ACWY is frequently utilized as an active control or comparator vaccine. In this context, it serves as a blinded control that provides a tangible health benefit (protection against meningococcal disease) but does not confer protection against the primary pathogen under investigation (e.g., *Salmonella Typhi*), allowing for an ethical and effective assessment of new vaccine candidates.
