meningococcal polysaccharide vaccine, groups A, C, Y, and W-135

Meningococcal polysaccharide vaccine, groups A, C, Y, and W-135 (MPSV4) is a tetravalent vaccine composed of purified capsular polysaccharides from four serogroups of Neisseria meningitidis. Developed by Sanofi Pasteur and marketed under the brand name Menomune, it was the first quadrivalent meningococcal vaccine available in the United States. The vaccine works by inducing the production of serogroup-specific bactericidal antibodies. Unlike meningococcal conjugate vaccines (MCV4), MPSV4 is a plain polysaccharide vaccine that does not recruit T-cell help, resulting in a lack of immunological memory and poor immunogenicity in children under two years of age. Following the widespread adoption of conjugate vaccines, Sanofi Pasteur discontinued the production of Menomune in 2017.
