Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Meningococcal polysaccharide vaccine (A,C,Y,W-135) is an inactivated vaccine designed to provide active immunization against invasive meningococcal disease caused by *Neisseria meningitidis* serogroups A, C, Y, and W-135. It consists of purified capsular polysaccharides extracted from these specific serogroups of the bacterium. The vaccine works by stimulating the recipient's immune system to produce antibodies against these polysaccharides, thereby conferring protection. Unlike conjugate vaccines, plain polysaccharide vaccines typically elicit a T-cell independent B-cell immune response, which can result in shorter-lived immunity and may be less immunogenic in very young children. This vaccine does not protect against *Neisseria meningitidis* serogroup B or other bacterial pathogens. It is primarily indicated for the prevention of meningococcal infections, including meningitis and septicemia, especially in high-risk populations and during outbreaks.
