Overview

Meningococcal polysaccharide vaccine group A is a monovalent bacterial vaccine used for active immunization against invasive disease caused by *Neisseria meningitidis* serogroup A. It consists of the purified capsular polysaccharide of the bacterium. Historically, it was a cornerstone of the National Immunization Program (NIP) in China to control epidemic cerebrospinal meningitis, which was predominantly caused by serogroup A. While effective in older children and adults, polysaccharide vaccines generally exhibit poor immunogenicity in children under two years of age and do not induce long-term immunological memory or herd immunity, leading to the increasing use of conjugate vaccines in modern immunization schedules.
