Menstrual blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MenSCs) are a population of multipotent adult stem cells isolated from menstrual fluid. They possess typical mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) characteristics, including the expression of markers such as CD73, CD90, and CD105, and the ability to differentiate into adipogenic, osteogenic, and chondrogenic lineages. Compared to bone marrow-derived MSCs, MenSCs exhibit higher proliferation rates and can be collected through a non-invasive procedure. Their therapeutic potential is primarily attributed to their potent immunomodulatory effects—such as inhibiting T-cell proliferation and reducing pro-inflammatory cytokine levels—and their ability to secrete various paracrine factors that promote angiogenesis and tissue repair. Clinical development, led by organizations such as S-Evans Biosciences and Zhejiang University, spans multiple indications including acute respiratory distress syndrome (H7N9, COVID-19), liver cirrhosis, type 1 diabetes, and endometrial disorders like Asherman's syndrome.
