Overview

Menstrual blood mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes (MenSC-Exos) are an investigational cell-free therapeutic consisting of extracellular vesicles harvested from mesenchymal stem cells found in menstrual blood. Developed by Shulan (Hangzhou) Hospital, these exosomes are being evaluated for the treatment of liver cirrhosis. The mechanism of action involves the delivery of bioactive cargo, such as microRNAs and proteins, to the liver, where they suppress the activation of hepatic stellate cells and modulate the TGF-beta signaling pathway to reduce fibrosis and inflammation. This approach aims to provide the regenerative benefits of stem cell therapy while minimizing risks associated with whole-cell transplantation, such as immunogenicity or tumorigenicity.
