Overview

Mentha arvensis top is a plant extract derived from the aerial parts (tops) of Mentha arvensis, commonly known as wild mint or corn mint. It is used in some over-the-counter products, often as an ingredient in topical preparations for its cooling and soothing effects. The primary active constituents include menthol (35-70%), menthone (15-30%), (-)-menthyl acetate (4-14%), and pulegone (1-4%). These compounds are responsible for its characteristic aroma and pharmacological actions. The essential oil from Mentha arvensis may act by providing local counterirritant effects when applied to the skin, leading to a sensation of cooling that can help relieve minor pain or discomfort. Internally, mint oil has been used for functional gastrointestinal discomfort associated with bloating and bile complaints; externally it is used as an inhalant for respiratory tract catarrh or as a rub for muscular pain and nerve pain[1][5][8]. There are no approved pharmaceutical indications; use is primarily traditional or in non-prescription products. The main pharmacological effect comes from menthol activating cold-sensitive TRPM8 receptors on sensory nerves, producing a cooling sensation that can mask pain signals[5][8]. Menthol-rich oils may also inhibit certain cytochrome P450 enzymes such as CYP1A2, CYP2C19, CYP2C9, and CYP3A4[5].
