menthol + propanediol

Menthol-based aromatherapy is a non-traditional therapeutic intervention being investigated by Beijing Anzhen Hospital to mitigate postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). The specific formulation consists of 70% menthol and 30% propanediol, administered via inhalation twice daily for six months. Menthol, the active component, is a cyclic terpene alcohol that may exert neuroprotective effects and enhance cognitive function through the modulation of neurotransmitter systems and cerebral hemodynamics. It is hypothesized to act via the activation of TRPM8 receptors in the nasal mucosa, which subsequently triggers signaling pathways to the central nervous system. This approach is being evaluated in the randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled ARCTIC-PCI trial.
