Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Mentholatum is a line of over-the-counter (OTC) topical vapor rubs and ointments developed by The Mentholatum Company, a subsidiary of Rohto Pharmaceutical. These products are primarily used for the symptomatic relief of cough and cold symptoms, including chest and nasal congestion, as well as minor muscle aches. The formulations typically contain a combination of natural active ingredients such as camphor (9%) and menthol (1.3%), which act as counterirritants. When applied topically to the chest, throat, or back, the product releases aromatic vapors that soothe nasal passages and provide a cooling sensation, while the topical application helps alleviate minor aches and pains through counterirritant mechanisms. The brand has been commercially available since 1889 and is approved for use in adults and children aged 2 and older.
