Overview

Mepenzolate is an antimuscarinic (anticholinergic) agent primarily used to treat peptic ulcers and other gastrointestinal disorders. It works by competitively inhibiting acetylcholine at muscarinic receptors in the smooth muscle of the gastrointestinal tract, leading to decreased gastric acid and pepsin secretion as well as suppression of spontaneous contractions of the colon. This results in reduced stomach acid production and slowed intestinal motility. Mepenzolate was previously approved for improving healing of gastric ulcers but has not been shown to contribute significantly to ulcer healing or prevention of recurrence. It is available by prescription and is typically administered orally.
