Overview

Mephedrone is a synthetic stimulant drug of the amphetamine and cathinone classes. Chemically known as 4-methylmethcathinone (4-MMC), it acts as a monoamine releasing agent and reuptake inhibitor for dopamine (DA), serotonin (5-HT), and norepinephrine (NE). This results in increased levels of these neurotransmitters in the brain. The drug produces effects similar to MDMA (ecstasy), cocaine and amphetamines—such as euphoria, increased sociability and energy. Mephedrone is typically found in tablet or crystal form and can be swallowed or snorted; less commonly it may be injected. It has a rapid onset with effects lasting several hours depending on dose and route of administration. Side effects include cardiovascular changes such as elevated heart rate/blood pressure and psychological symptoms like anxiety[1][3][5][6][8]. Mephedrone was first synthesized in 1929 but became widely used recreationally from around 2007–2010 before being banned in many countries due to its abuse potential.
