Overview

Mephedrone + methcathinone is an illicit combination of two synthetic stimulant drugs from the cathinone chemical class. Mephedrone (4-methylmethcathinone) is known for its entactogenic and stimulant effects, acting as a non-selective monoamine uptake inhibitor and releaser at dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine transporters, with additional affinity for 5-HT2A and α-adrenergic receptors[1][2][3]. Methcathinone is a closely related stimulant, structurally similar to both mephedrone and cathinone itself, with primary action as a dopamine and norepinephrine releasing agent. The combination is used recreationally for its strong stimulant and empathogenic effects but carries elevated risks of harmful cardiovascular and neuropsychiatric effects, including increased risk of heart strain, serotonin syndrome, and seizures. Both substances are controlled in most jurisdictions, and their combination significantly increases the danger of acute toxicity[1][4].
