Overview

Mepicaine-L is a local anesthetic formulation containing 2% mepivacaine hydrochloride and levonordefrin (1:20,000). Mepivacaine is an amide-type local anesthetic that works by stabilizing neuronal membranes and preventing the initiation and transmission of nerve impulses through the inhibition of voltage-gated sodium channels. Levonordefrin is a sympathomimetic amine that acts as a vasoconstrictor, reducing local blood flow to prolong the duration of the anesthetic effect and decrease systemic toxicity. This combination is manufactured by Alexandria Company for Pharmaceuticals & Chemical Industries in Egypt and is primarily indicated for dental procedures such as tooth extractions. Cairo University has conducted Phase 3 clinical trials evaluating its efficacy in pediatric patients for maxillary molar extractions.
