Overview

Mepivacaine + fentanyl is a combination of two pharmaceutical agents used primarily in anesthesia and analgesia. Mepivacaine is an amide-type local anesthetic with intermediate duration, commonly used for local or regional anesthesia by infiltration, nerve block, or epidural routes. It works by blocking sodium channels on neuronal membranes, thereby inhibiting nerve impulse conduction and producing loss of sensation[1][3]. Fentanyl is a potent synthetic opioid agonist at the mu-opioid receptor, providing strong analgesic effects and often used as an adjunct to local anesthetics in various forms of anesthesia[4][5][6]. When combined (e.g., intrathecally), mepivacaine provides rapid-onset sensory and motor block while fentanyl enhances the quality and duration of analgesia without significantly affecting neonatal outcomes in obstetric settings[2]. This combination may be chosen for procedures requiring both effective regional anesthesia and enhanced pain control.
