Meprasil

Meprasil is a branded generic small molecule drug developed and marketed by Fidson Healthcare Plc, a Nigerian pharmaceutical company. The active ingredient is omeprazole, which belongs to the proton pump inhibitor (PPI) class of drugs. Omeprazole is a substituted benzimidazole that inhibits the final phase of gastric acid secretion by targeting the H+/K+ ATPase enzyme system (the proton pump) at the secretory surface of the gastric parietal cell. Meprasil is indicated for the management of peptic ulcer diseases and other acid-related disorders, including short-term treatment of active duodenal ulcer, active benign gastric ulcer, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis, and pathologic hypersecretory conditions such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. It is also used in combination with antibacterial agents for H. pylori eradication. The drug is supplied as capsules for oral administration, with each capsule containing 20mg of omeprazole in the form of enteric-coated granules. Fidson Healthcare was the first company in Nigeria to manufacture proton pump inhibitors in 2002 with their Meprasil brand.
