Meprobamate is a carbamate derivative used as an anxiolytic drug with sedative, muscle relaxant, and anticonvulsant properties. It was initially developed by Frank Milan Berger at Wallace Laboratories and introduced in the mid-1950s as one of the first widely marketed anxiolytics. Its mechanism of action involves binding to GABA-A receptors, enhancing the inhibitory effects of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the central nervous system, which leads to a calming effect, sedation, and altered pain perception. It also affects the thalamus and limbic system and inhibits polysynaptic reflexes at the spinal level. Meprobamate is indicated for the short-term relief of anxiety symptoms and the management of anxiety disorders. It is a Schedule IV controlled substance due to its potential for dependence and abuse, and its use has largely been superseded by benzodiazepines.
